bullet  General Notes

Son of Henry Crow and Martha McGary. Husband of Sally Ann Kirk (1836 –1878), married 1857. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Mayo (1845 –1912), married 1880. Worked as a farmer, postmaster, assessor, and as a day laborer. Died of chronic nephritis in Bovine, Washington Township, Gibson County, Indiana. Buried in the "Crow Grave Yard, Bovine, Ind." on 15 December 1905.

A note about his name:
In several family histories and elsewhere on the web, you will see his name listed as "Richard Dickinson Crow." I believe this is a made-up version of his name.
In the 1850, 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses his name was listed as Dickson Crow. In his two marriage records his name was listed as Dickson Crow. In his appointment as a US Postmaster, his civil war registration, his military service records, local directories AND his probate records, he was listed as Dickson Crow. In the 1860 census, his name was spelled Dixon Crow. Only in his death record is his name listed as "Richard Crow" —  perhaps an assumption that "Dick" (as his name was listed on his wife's death certificate) was short for Richard, rather than Dickson. His name also shows up as Richard on one of his son's death certificates, as well as on the death certificate of his daughter Celia. However, the evidence from primary source records is overwhelmingly in favor of his name being simply DICKSON CROW.
