  • She has conflicting death information of 17 June 1920 and Long Creek, Grant County, Oregon, USA.

  • Gallery: Death Certificate, on 20 June 1920, in Monument, Grant County, Oregon, USA.

Birth and death dates for Mary Jane Tetrick are somewhat problematic, with various conflicting albeit similar dates. For her birth date, you have either 6 March 1835 or 8 March 1835. For her death date, we have 17 June 1920, 20 June 1920, and 28 June 1920.

According to OneWorldTree information (and information on many published trees on the Internet), Mary Jane Tetrick was born 6 March 1835 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois, USA and she died on 17 June 1920 on the Blackwell Ranch in Hamilton, Grant County, Oregon, USA (some family trees say the location was Long Creek, Grant County, Oregon). I do not know if these dates come from a gravestone someplace, or from other family records.

According to her Oregon death certificate, however, Mary was born on 08 March 1835 and she died on 20 June 1920 in Monument, Grant County, Oregon, USA. Because of the poor handwriting on the death certificate, the death date can be read as 28 June 1920 (and you will see that death date in a few trees as well). A close examination of the death certificate will show that the way the coroner writes "8"s is different than the way he writes "0"s, and — once this difference is taken into account — the death date written down proves to be 20 June 1920.

Mary's age at death on her death certificate was listed as 85 years, 3 months, and 9 days. When you calculate this age at death from the birthdate of 08 March 1835, you come up with a death date of 17 June 1920.  (If you calculate date of birth from age listed at death using the 20 June 1920 date you come up with a birthdate of 11 March 1835.)

Her cause of death is listed as "Apoplexy with heart failure", but below that is written "Copied from records." There is no date on the doctor's signature, there is no informant listed, and no date on the original registrar's signature. A second registrar signs and dates the death certificate nearly 2 years later on 26 March 1922. This indicates to me that the death certificate was likely not filled out at the time of death, and so the death date of 20 June 1920 and the death location of Monument, Grant County, Oregon may not be entirely accurate.

For more definitive proof on Mary's birth and death dates, we will need to find additional sources — family bibles, funeral bills, or whatever. Until then, I will take 08 March 1835 as my preferred birthdate, and 17 June 1920 as my preferred deathdate. Although family lore does say she died and was buried at their homestead in Hamilton, Grant County, Oregon (and several children were living at North Fork, Grant County, Oregon in the 1920 census), Mary herself was with a son in Scappoose Precinct, Columbia County, Oregon in the 1920 census and it is also possible that she died there.

No marriage record can be found. There is an alternate marriage location of Shelby County, Illinois, but this seems less likely since Mary's first husband died and was buried in Mercer County, Missouri in 1858.
