General Notes
Carroll Ellen (Richmond) Haining — known as “Penny” to family and friends — died at her home in Seattle on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at the age of 80 years old. She was born in the little town of Maupin, Oregon on July 23, 1932, the daughter of Rolla Everett Richmond and his wife Alma May (Powell) Richmond. She was one of six children, having four brothers and one sister. Carroll graduated from Maupin High School in 1950, and then moved to Portland to attend Multnomah Bible College. It was there that a roommate gave her the nickname by which she was known the rest of her life — "Penny" (after her beautiful red hair). Penny earned her Diploma in Bible from Multnomah in 1953, and then moved to Los Angeles where she attended nursing school. She graduated from Los Angeles County General Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1956. It was while she was working as a registered nurse in Los Angeles that she met her husband to be, a dashing young doctor, Robert Gerard Haining ("Jerry"). Penny and Jerry married in Los Angeles on the 28th of February, 1958.
In the early years of their marriage the couple moved quite a bit, so almost every child was born in a different city. When the children were young, Penny enjoyed camping and ski trips as well as dinner parties and holiday visits to family in Oregon and California. She took classes in painting and ethnic cooking (which her children were unfortunately too young to appreciate). After the children were older, Penny returned to school at the University of Washington to pursue her interest in art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Painting and Art History in 1980, and in 1984 obtained a master’s degree in museology with a thesis on fakes and forgeries in Northwest Coast Indian art.
In addition to her love of art and painting, Penny also loved to read, especially mysteries. She appreciated Seattle’s cultural offerings, particularly the museums and theatre. For more than 20 years Penny enjoyed season tickets to both Seattle Repertory Theatre and Civic Light Opera. She attended antique shows, and enjoyed collecting antique silver napkin rings, Southwest American Indian jewelry, and Barbie dolls. As her health began to decline in recent years, Penny continued to enjoy family gatherings and quiet evenings at home watching mysteries or drama on television. Friends will remember her for her kind and generous spirit, her faith in Christ Jesus, and her unwavering support of those she loved.
Penny was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her elder sister Beulah Springstead, and her brother Melvin Richmond. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jerry; her six children and three daughters-in-law; her 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers and one uncle; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loved ones too numerous to count.
Friends may call at Acacia Memorial Park on Saturday, September 8th, for the viewing (between 10 am and 2:30 pm) or for the graveside service and burial at 3 o’clock. On Tuesday, September 11th at 1 pm, there will be a memorial service at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, officiated by the Reverend Ray Moore.

Recorded Events in Her Life
- Nickname: Penny.
Penny had an unusal spelling to her first name, Carroll. Typically, “Carroll” is the masculine way of spelling of that name, so all her life Penny would get mail addressed to “Mr. Carroll Haining.” Penny says that the reason her name was spelled that way was because her mother Alma had had a boy cousin named “Carol” and Alma didn’t want it spelled the same way as her male cousin. So it was spelled “Carroll” instead.
Although Penny remained “Carroll” to her birth family, she picked up the nickname “Penny” from a roommate at Multnomah Bible School. Her roommate and another friend also had red hair, and so the roommate decided that they should all take red-hair nicknames. One became “Cherry,” Carroll became “Penny,” and there was a third nickname too. But out of the three nicknamed redheads, “Penny” was the only one whose nickname stuck. Carroll went by “Penny” for the rest of her adult life.
