Carmen Whiteley
Carmen Whiteley, 75, of Baker City, died Dec. 17, 2003.
There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway.
She was born on July 25, 1928, to Claude and Rachel Krigbaum in a farmhouse near Halfway. She was married to Daryl Whiteley on Dec. 22, 1945. They would have celebrated their 58th anniversary this year.
Daryl and Carmen worked in many places over the years. They spent a number of years in the livestock business. While managing a large cattle operation, Carmen had her own horse and helped with everything that needed to be done such as doctoring, branding and driving truck. They were true partners, without her help, people said, "we would have to hire two more men."
Carmen loved rodeos and saw lots of them including several times at the National Finals Rodeo. Whenever Daryl entered a rodeo and got hurt, she would say "it serves you right." Carmen and Daryl were not only husband and wife, but partners. While buying livestock they traveled all over the Western states and Canada.
Carmen almost always traveled with Daryl. While working construction, they spent 4 years in Hawaii where Daryl was a construction superintendent. Carmen spent all the time that she could on the beach looking for seashells. That 4 years was one of her happiest times.
Carmen was a member of the Trail Tenders organization for more than 11 years and volunteered countless hours at The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. She was involved in many activities at the center including being a member of the Sew 'N Sews.
Carmen was also a member of the Oregon California Trails Association. She and Daryl traveled to many conventions all over the Western states where Carmen made many friends she remained in contact with. Carmen will be missed by all of them and everyone who knew her.
