DIED- Mrs. Mary Jane Barklow, wife of Daniel Barklow, died Friday. Born in Richland Co.,Ill., June 15, 1868, daughter of William and Harriet Cross Pullen. Came to Myrtle Point at the age of 14 with her parents. Her mother died 11 days after coming to Myrtle Point. Married July 13,1884 to Daniel Barklow. Nine children born to them: John, Myrtle Point; Ida Esther, deceased; William Franklin, Myrtle Point; Mrs. Nancy Miller, Myrtle Point; Walter Irvin, Grants Pass; Cella Viola, deceased; Henry Earl, Myrtle Point; Daniel Schiller, Myrtle Point, and Leslie Vash, Marshfield, and 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Four brothers, Henry, Richard, Thomas and Jesse Pullen; three sisters: Mrs. Robert Minton, Mrs. Frank Zindars and Mrs. Walter Applegate and her step-mother, Mrs. L. Sheets. Buried Norway. Married 52 years.
At the time of their marriage, Barklow was engaged in logging and ranching. Shortly after, he started operating a stage between this city and Roseburg and continued at that occupation for about 16 years. He was one of the first to operate a stage on the only route in existence to Roseburg, the Old Coos Bay wagon road. After he gave up the stage contract, Barklow operated a grocery on the southeast corner of Spruce and 5th streets and later on the southeast corner of Spruce and 4th streets. In the interim he and his wife cooked for the old Myrtle Point Hotel. After he sold out his grocery interest which he held for 5 or 6 years, he retired and gave his entire time to working on his farm in West Myrtle Point at the junction of the Arago and Stringtown roads where his wife spent her last days.
