Mae was born the seventh child of Leroy Houser (1886 –1963) and Eunice Marie Rutledge (1897 –1971). She was first married to Laurence "Larry" Laymond (1916 –1945) on 22 February 1941, but their marriage ended in divorce about three or four months later.

On the 30 August 1941, she married Willard Pershing Graber (1918 –1988) in Vancouver, Washington. With Willard she had once son, Roger Victor Graber (1942 –1997). However, Mae and Willard's marriage ended in divorce in 1945, the year in which Mae had another child with Raymond "Ray" Elbert Hayes (1920 –1995), whom she married on the 2 August 1947. Following her marriage to Ray, Roger was raised by Ray and took his last name.

Mae died in Creswell, Oregon from brain cancer caused by malignant melanoma. She was buried in Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, Oregon.
