Birth Notes
Although there is no community now known as Massinaway, both Mary Ann's obituary and family records state that she was born in Massinaway, Indiana. So where it it, exactly? Well, "Massinaway" is an older spelling of "Mississinewa." The Mississinewa River runs through Grant County, and the county seat, Marion, was founded only 7 miles downstream from a famous battle site (the Battle of Mississinewa, sometimes known as the Battle of Mississineway [and in at least one Congressional report it was referred to the Battle of Massinaway]). Since Mary's parents married in Grant County in 1840, it seems likely that Mary's birth location was near the site of the 1812 battle.
