General Notes
ABRAHAM DOUGLAS TUCKER was born on 13 Feb 1857 in Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, USA, the son of Joseph Tucker and Nancy Bedwell. His father Joseph was originally from Kentucky (as were his paternal grandparents); although Joseph and Nancy married in Richland County in 1848. Abraham was their fourth surviving child, and their first son. His mother, Nancy, was from Tennessee (or Indiana or Grayson County, Virginia, depending on which record you believe).
On 01 November 1883, Abe married Clara Caroline O. Dickey, daughter of James M. Dickey and Mary Maglone. Carrie's father, James, was a blacksmith, originally from North Carolina; her mother Mary was the daughter daughter of James Maglone of County Monaghan, Ireland and Mary Landers of Poughkeepsie, New York. Mary died when Carrie was only 4 years old, and James did not re-marry, so Carrie had grown up motherless.
Abe worked as a farmer, and then later as a clerk. Abe and Carrie had a daughter, Julia May Tucker, born in July of either 1884 or 1885 in Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, USA. Unfortunately, Carrie died young, in 1885 (according to her gravestone), perhaps when May was born, or perhaps at the birth of another child that did not survive. Carrie was buried in Hanna Cemetery in Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, USA.
A few years after Carrie's death, on 28 November 1889, Abe married again, to Carrie's first cousin, Elsie Elizabeth Maglone, daughter of James Maglone and Mary Henson. Elsie had previously been married to Abe's first cousin, Hugh M. Tucker (son of James Tucker and Frances Toliver), but he also died young and Elsie was left a young widow with a daughter to raise, Laura E. Tucker. The two daughters, May and Laura, were double second cousins to each other, but now they became step-sisters in the new merged family. Abe and Elsie had a third child together, a son, Corta Emery Tucker, was born in 1893.
The family continued to live in Noble, Illinois. Their children all married. Laura was first — she married a minister, Charles Ealy, in 1906, and had three sons, Abraham, Charles (died in infancy) and Marion. In 1909, May married Dan Hemrich; they lived locally but had no children themselves. Finally, in 1919, Corta married Ethel Foster, and they also had three sons: Donald, Douglas, and Ray Dean (died in 1951).
Abe died on 29 March 1937 in Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, USA. He was 80 years old. He was buried in Hanna Cemetery on the first of April, 1937, next to his first wife Carrie. Elsie lived as a widow for another 16 years, and then she died herself in Noble, Illinois, on the 8th of May, 1953. She was buried in Hanna Cemetery, next to her second husband, Abraham Tucker, on 11 May 1953. A headstone was erected in memory of the three of them — Abraham Tucker and his two wives, cousins Carrie and Elsie.
