From correspondence between Rae Walton and Bud Schafer in the late 1980's. Rae Walton(now deceased) writes:
"In the Onondaga 1820 census, John was listed as age 3. He was the youngest in the family and all the children were probably born in Augusta so this would indicate the family moved from Augusta to Onondaga sometime during John's first three years. John and Lucretia and their five children left Onondaga in 1852 and headed west. They had been farmers in Onondaga for over thirty years. They had been in Illinois for several years when, on April 12, 1861, the Civil War started. John, feeling a great sense of duty, decided to enlist as a Private in 2nd Liuet. Thomas J. William's Company (A) 112th Illinois Infantry Regiment on March 12, 1864 to serve three years even though he was then 44 years old and still had three children dependent on him. His youngest daughter, Nancy Ophelia had been born in 1853 in Illinois) While in the Army, he contracted an illness that led to Chronic Nephritis and swelling of his legs which made him unable to walk. He received a medical discharge May 31, 1865 at Mound City, Ill. where he had been hospitalized. His discharge papers are with the Richmond papers in my posession. As of this date I have not been able to find where in Illinois the Richmond's lived. Since Any Minerva, dau. of John, married B. F. Walton in Genesso, it could well be that the Richmond's were farmers in Henry County, but here again I have not been able to find Census data to give me a clue. John was approved for Civil War Pension on March 7, 1867 - # 121,657. It was about this period that the Richmond's with daughter Amy Minerva, B. F. Walton and many other members of the Richmond family, including Lucretia's brother John Vaughn, moved on to Iowa to take advantage of the Homestead Law which granted public land to settlers free or at a low price on the condition that they live on it and make it productive. The first Homestead Law in the U.S. was passed in 1862 and signed by President Lincoln. The homesteaders had to be at least twenty-one years old or the head of a family. He had to be an American Citizen, or have declared his intention to become one. The homestead became the property of the homesteader after he had lived on it for a certain number of years and had made certain improvements. Veterans were given preference. This helped John and his son Henry to acquire land in Iowa. Henry also fought in the Civil War. After John's death in 1892, Lucretia had applied for widow benefits under the terms of the Civil War Act. She was granted a pension on Feb. 15, 1893. Certificate #386268. She received this pension until her death March 10, 1897. She was 85 years old. Had John not enlisted in the Civil War, he would have probably survived much longer than he did."
