General Notes
OZIAS PRESTON WHITE was born 13 July 1815 in Jefferson County, New York, USA. His parents are unknown, and his birthdate is calculated from the age at death listed on his funeral card. Ozias was a blacksmith and a farmer.
He first married Sarah A. THOMPSON, daughter of Barnebus Thompson. Sarah was born about 1821 in Ohio. They married on 22 March 1840 in LaGrange County, Indiana, USA. Three children are known to have survived from this union: John Franklin White (1840 –1926), Martha Jane White Beardsley (1841–1934), and William White (1846 –1928). According to the 1850 census mortality register, Sarah died in January 1850 in Shelby County, Indiana of "P.M. Laybor."
Ozias next married Julia Ann CALKINS on 15 August 1850 in Kosciusko County, Indiana, USA. Julia was born about 1830 in New York, the daughter of Benjamin Calkins and Jeanette Romp. Seven surviving children are known from Ozias' second marriage to Julia: Homer White (1851–1899), Walter White (1854 –1932), Mary Rosette White Likens (1855 –1925), Sullivan White (1858 –1934), Edward Fremont White (1861–1940), Charles White (1863 –1941), and a daughter, Alpha White, who was born about 1872 and probably died sometime before 1900. Julia's deathdate and location are not known, but she probably died in Iowa, or possibly in Missouri.
Lastly, Ozias married Sarah Frances BURNSIDE on 22 August 1874 in Saline County, Missouri, USA. Sarah — or "Fannie," as she was known — was born in January 1843 in Saline County, Missouri, the daughter of Archibald Burnside and Susan Zimmerman. She was previously married to Henry Mayfield in 1862. Ozias and Fannie had three known children, but only two survived to adulthood: Schuyler C. White (1875 –1948) and Alva or Alvin White (Abt 1881–1945). Their youngest known daughter, Ada or Oda White, lived for only 2 days before dying in 1885 of "deficient vitality" and "convulsions."
Ozias died on 15 February 1899, as noted on his funeral card. He probably died in Miami Township, Saline County, Missouri (since that's where Oda was born and died in 1885 and that's also where his widow, Fannie, appeared in the 1900 census). Ozias was likely buried in Harmony Church Cemetery in Miami, although there is apparently no gravestone and his burial location has not been confirmed. However, thirty years after Ozias' death, his widow Sarah "Fannie" Burnside White died and was buried in Harmony Cemetery.
