- His obituary was published in an unknown newspaper in 2004 in Tennessee, USA.
Dr. Hugh Wynn Vaughan, beloved husband, father, grandfather and physician, formerly of Munford, Tenn., passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home in Bolivar.
He was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Mayfield, Ky., to the Rev. William Marvin Vaughan Sr. and Truma Elizabeth Calhoun. As the son of a Methodist minister, he lived in many different towns in west Tennessee during his youth. He attended Lambuth College and then entered the U.S. Navy as a First Class Petty Officer. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, graduating in 1953. He then interned for one year and married Violet Marea Petty. They moved to Munford, Tenn., where Hugh began practicing general family medicine at the Munford Clinic with his lifelong friend and partner, Dr. Sid Witherington.
He practiced for 43½ years among the good people of Tipton County and west Tennessee. He just recently finished a book of stories about his life in Munford entitled "My Life as a Country Doctor" and was awaiting the maiden copy for his final approval before mass printing. From his conclusion he wrote, ". . . know that I am blessed to have been a country doctor, and that I am blessed to have practiced where I did, when I did, and am fortunate to have been born in America. Life has been good to me. I am grateful."
Another way Hugh poured his life into others was evidenced by his being one of the founding fathers of Tipton-Rosemark Academy, an ongoing private Christian school in Tennessee. In 2003 he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Hall of Fame at Tipton-Rosemark.
Hugh loved being with people and described life as "nothing but fun." "Lucky all my life" was another phrase Dr. Vaughan uttered frequently. He was an avid gardener and golfer, and he had strong political opinions, writing numerous letters to the editor and letters to his congressmen. Traditions were very important to him, as family members and those who benefited from his holiday eggnog and Christmas parties can attest. He held a special reverence for his mother, whom he purposed to honor in all he did.
He is survived by his wife, Violet, with whom he spent 49½ years; three sons, ----- ----- and wife ----- of Huntington, W.Va., ----- ----- and wife ----- of Rochester, Minn., and ----- ----- of Olympia, Wash.; and two daughters, ----- ----- and husband ----- of Omaha, Neb., and ----- ----- and husband ----- of Bolivar. Other surviving family members include one brother, ----- ----- and wife ----- of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, ----- ----- of Fredricktown and ----- ----- and husband ----- of Gulf Shores, Ala. He had 15 grandchildren, four nephews and seven nieces.
Services were Tuesday, March 23, at First Baptist Church, Bolivar, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Murray Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
