Mary and her husband Hugh left their home in Pennsylvania and headed out west while Mary was very pregnant in the dead of winter.  Her daughter Isabel was born in a covered wagon somewhere in the Allegheny Mountains. Later, it is said that she and her nursing child, Patrick, died of milk-sickness, that is, a disease gotten by drinking milk of cattle which had eaten poisonous weeds.
