bullet  General Notes

ROBERT BOYD HAINING was born 15 January 1887 in Fairlie, Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of shoemaker Robert Boyd Haining (1856 –1939) and his wife, Elizabeth Allan Balmer.  He worked as a grocer's apprentice in 1901 in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland.

On 15 June 1910, at Astarta Cottage in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Robert married his wife, Elizabeth Gowans, daughter of Walter Gowans and Mary Hendrie.  She worked as a dressmaker.  They soon emigrated to West Victoria, Australia, where Robert worked as a grocer in Dean's Marsh.  Later he worked as a clerk for the State Coal Mine which was owned by the Victorian Railways.

Robert and Elizabeth had three still-born children in addition to their two surviving daughters.  In 1948, at the age of 61 years old, Robert died of angina heart.  His gravestone lists the date of death as the 24th of November 1948, but according to the notice in the local newspaper, he died on the 25th.  He was laid to rest at Wonthaggi Cemetery on the 27th of November, 1948.  A few months later, his elder daughter Mamie died and she was buried next to him.  Robert's widow Elizabeth lived another 24 years before she died of heart failure at the age of 87 years old, then she was laid to rest in Wonthaggi Cemetery next to Robert.
