John Wesley Powell was born and raised in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon. Intent upon becoming a doctor, John went to Willamette University for the start of his Medical studies. While there, he took two course lectures in the Medical Department. He then took a course at Louisville Medical College in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated with Honors. He left Kentucky after graduation, and started his profession in Kansas. In the 1875 state census he was living in Centropolis, Franklin County with his cousin, Thomas Morris Center. He married Martha Angeline Browning, in Centropolis, Kansas, April 4, 1878. After marriage, he and Angelina moved to Nevada where John set up practice. In 1880, they were living in Paradise Valley, Humboldt, Nevada. In 1889, the family moved to Oregon City, Oregon. Dr. John Powell was a Republican and, in 1886, while living in Nevada, he was elected to the 13th session of the State Legislature. That session elected the "Free Silver Advocate", Hon. William M. Stewart to the U.S. Senate. John and Angeline had seven children. Bertha, John and Lily all died in childhood of scarlet fever. The other four were: Gertrude A Powell; Myrtle P Powell; Stella Powell and Frederick Gordan Powell.
