bullet  General Notes

Mary "Polly" Pettingell/Pettengill (maiden surname was spelled a number of different ways) was born 04 Feb 1790 in North Yarmouth, Maine to Benjamin Pettingell and Mercy Briggs.

Abt 1814 in New York she married William King RICE. He was born 30 Dec 1792 in Conway, Franklin County, Massachusetts, the son of Cyrus and Abigail RICE. Polly and William had 8 children, but then William died 29 Dec 1839 in Conway, near Ottawa, La Salle County, Illinois, USA.

In Cedar County, Iowa in 1841 Polly remarried, to the widower Beckwith Cook. Another 3 children were born to them.

Beckwith Cook journeyed to Oregon with several children from his first marriage to Sybil Olds (Seeley M. Cook and Joel B Cook, along with two daughters, Harriet Cook Cutlip, Sophia Cook Smith). Several of Mary's children made the journey as well — Horace Rice and four daughters Lucinda Rice Bushnell, Ruth Rice Collver, Nancy Rice Cook and Mary Rice Cook.

Beckwith Cook filed DLC claim (# 1206) located in Lane County between Crow and Vaughn, Oregon (also referred to as Noti Valley during early years). Other families in this wagon train claimed land in the same valley. This couple later located near Buena Vista, Polk County, Oregon. Beckwith Cook lived to the age of 92 years and passed away March 7, 1877. Mary Polly, passed on at the age of 84 years, February 4, 1874 (her birthday), and is buried next to her daughter Nancy. Nancy B. Cook, aged 57 years, (wife of Seeley M. Cook) passed away June 14, 1874, four months after her mother. Polly and Nancy are buried side by side at the Buena Vista Cemetery in Polk County, Oregon.
