bullet  General Notes

JAMES ORR was born 25 October 1883 in Craigmark, Dalmellington Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of coal miner James Clark Orr and his wife Robina McGregor.  When he was still a young boy, his family moved to Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland, and it was there that James grew up. It was a short childhood: he began work in the coal mines when he was only 11 years old.

When he was not-quite-21, James married his wife, Mary Jeffrey Cochrane, on the 30th of September 1904 in her hometown of Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. Both of their birthdays were in late October, and James was then 20 and Mary was nearly 18.

After a short while living in Irvine, the family settled in Dreghorn and raised three sons and three daughters to adulthood. Eldest daughter Ann Simpson Orr had died in infancy in 1905.

James arrived in the United States in 1927, along with his oldest son, James Findlay Orr.  A year later he was joined by his wife and his youngest three children. Although he had worked as a coal miner in Scotland, James was first employed as a gardener in Harvey. Then for 14 years he worked for the Whiting Company. He retired for a few years, but then took up work with the local newspaper, the Harvey Tribune.

James died in Memorial Hospital in Harvey on 10 July 1952 when he was 68 years old.

Services took place Friday, 11 July 1952 at the Kerr Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Napolitan of the Federated Church officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Park Cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, Mary; three daughters, Mrs. Robina Carlin, Mrs. Nida McCrindle and Mrs. Mae Ackerman, all of Harvey; three sons, Joseph and Hugh of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and James, Jr., of Harvey; a brother, Robert, of Winnetka; as well as 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
