bullet  General Notes

SYLVESTER LUCINDA UPPERMAN was the daughter of Civil War soldier Richard Upperman and his wife, Mary Maglone.  She was born on 02 Sep 1875 in Noble, Richland County, Illinois, USA. (In later years and records, Sylvia listed her birth year as 1878, but the 1880 census makes it clear she was born in 1875.)

Not much is known of Sylvia's father Richard Upperman.  He was born about 1839 in Richland County, Illinois, and was married before he enlisted in the army in 1862.  He served in Company G of the Illinois 98th Infantry Regiment.  Richard mustered out after 3 years, and then on 04 Feb 1867 he married Mary Maglone in Richland County, Illinois.  (What became of his first family is unknown.)  They had several children, although only two survived to adulthood.  James (b. about 1868) and Ada (b. 1870) both died before the 1880 census.

Richard also became ill, and filed an invalid claim on 22 Aug 1874.  Mary filed for a widow's pension on 29 Aug 1878, so Richard died sometime before then.  He was buried in Noble, Richland County, Illinois (and a headstone was provided by the government in 1894 in McMurtry Cemetery).

On 24 Nov 1878, Mary (Maglone) Upperman married James Richenson in Richland County, Illinois.  It was a short-lived marriage, for whatever reason, and less than a year and half later, on 21 April 1880, Mary married again — this time to Allen Williams.  The family appears on the 1880 census in Noble, Richland County, Illinois — Allen Williams, wife Mary, step-daughters Hettie and Sylvia, and Mary's sister Rachel.  The family grew as Mary and Allen had children of their own — twins Nora and Noah, and daughter Nellie.

Sylvia grew up in the town she was born in — Noble, Richland County, Illinois — and it was there that she married her first husband, Jessie F. Harris, on 28 July 1892.  It was a short-lived marriage.

Only a year later, on 19 Aug 1893, in Gibson County, Indiana, Sylvia married Marion Byes.  Sylvia and Marion settled in Noble, Illinois for a time.  Their eldest daughter, Cloie Edith, was born there in 1894.  But then they moved back to Owensville, Gibson County, Indiana, and several more children were born there — Loy Attie, Joseph Clifford (who died as an infant), Flossie Myrtle, and Mary Elizabeth

The family moved to Success, Clay County, Arkansas, USA.  Twins Ostin and Osbern were born there in 1906, followed by daughters Ghita Irene and Hallie Neola.  Sometime after 1920, Sylvia and Marion divorced.

On 24 Dec 1925 in Jackson, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, Sylvia married John Jacob Shuls. John was actually Sylvia's brother-in-law.  In 1902 John had married Nora Williams, Sylvia's half sister, but Nora died quite young (before the 1910 census).  John re-married, and then his second wife died.  Then in 1925 John and Sylvia got married — but this was another short-lived marriage.  By early 1928, Sylvia was back in Success, Arkansas.

Finally, on 22 Oct 1928 in Success, Clay County, Arkansas, Sylvia married her last husband, Otis A. Miller.  He was a younger man — nearly 20 years' her junior.  According to their marriage record, he was "34" and Sylvia was "46" — although actually she was 53.  (Way to go, Sylvia!)  In 1930, Otis and Sylvia moved from Success, Arkansas to Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri and they remained there for the next 22 years.  Sylvia got kidney cancer, and she died on 27 Sep 1952 in Doniphan Township, Ripley County, Missouri.  She was buried in Hitt Cemetery in Success, Arkansas on 30 Sep 1952.
