According to his obituary, Joe was a member of St. Simon's Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He worked as a general yardmaster for the B. & O. Railroad.  During WWI he served with the Engineer Corps of the Army overseas.  His tombstone says he was a member of the 168 Company of the Transportation Corps. After WWI he spent about a year in Russia building the railroad.  He said, "he was never so cold in all his life."  The family moved to Washington, IN when Joe was transfered there by the B & O.
