bullet  General Notes

Notes from Bud Schafer:

# +11 jbr, s258 The following is from "The Richmond Family" by Joshua Bailey Richmond

"11.  EDWARD Richmond 3 (John 2, John 1), was born in Taunton, February 8, 1665.  He married, first Mercy _____; and second, May 6, 1711 Rebecca Thurston, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Thurston, born November 28, 1689.  She died, and he married Mary _____.  He died in 1741."
Children by first wife (born in Taunton):
Mercy, Edward, Richard, Josiah, Nathanial, Seth, Elizabeth, Phebe; as enumerated.
Children by second wife:
Sarah, Mary, Priscilla and Eunice

"The dates of birth of children of the first wife are correct within less than one year, being computed from the date of death and the age at that time."

"The will, dated June 3, 1738, probated Dec. 9, 1741 (Vol. 10, p. 111), mentions wife Mary Richmond; sons Edward, Nathaniel and Seth of Taunton, and Josiah of Middleboro; and daughters, Mary Burt, Mercy Walker, Priscilla Hackett, Sarah Crane, Elizabeth Hatheway and Phebe Elliott; and brother John Richmond.  He reserves one quarter of an acre for a burying place "for myself and posterity, at the place where the burying place is already begun."  The witnesses to the will are John Richmond, John Richmond, Jr., and Elkanah Leonard; Elizabeth Hatheway is mentioned in the will, but not in its record."

"He and Joseph bought one hundred and fifty acres of land in Middleboro, of John Rogers of Duxbury, in 1687."

"The descendants of Nathaniel say that he was born about 1700; that he was killed at the siege of Louisburg; that he left a son Nathaniel, who married his second cousin, Mary Richmond (daughter of John and Dighton (Mirick) Richmond); that this last Nathaniel was born about 1731 , and died in 1803, at Camillus, New York."

It is possible that there was no 3rd wife, i.e. that "Mary" was Mercy - see further research s492, 493, 494.

Is it possibly that Mary/Mercy (born 1668) was his 1st cousin, dau of his father's beother Edward?  #4754 has her listed as "Mercy Richmond".

add'l info WFT Vol II, #4754

Joshua Bailey Richmond has Rebecca married to this Edward (#11, son of Edward and Sarah ____ _ Richmond) and having 4 children by that marriage. He ALSO has (this) Rebecca married to Edward Richmond (#104, son of Edward and Mercy (Richmond?) Richmond (#104) and lists the same four children by that marriage.  This is obviously in error, perhaps Melody Harmon has resolved, need to contact her.  Bud 9/94.

In the listing for Edward, son of Edward and Mercy, they were the same 4 children but were listed as being born in Taunton, Massachusetts.  Other than daughter Priscilla now having 1 husband from each listing, all other information was duplicated.

Estimates are based off of known event dates (birth dates, christening dates, marriage dates, graduation dates, retirement events, death dates, etc.) from the lives of the individual's immediate ancestors or descendants. Women are estimated to be roughly 20 years older than the birth of the first child; men are about 5 years older than their wives; siblings are estimated at 2 years apart.
