  • His obituary was published about 7 March 2013 in an unknown newspaper in Texas, USA.

William "Billy" Otto Smith, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his residence in Abilene, Texas. A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, in Drummond Cemetery in View, TX with Rev. Burt Williams officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene. Honorary pallbearers and escorts will be the Patriot Guard. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Born on August 18, 1927 in Bay City, Texas, Billy left his earthly residence on March 5, 2013 bound for his eternal home in Glory.
Billy was the youngest of seven children born to Fred Maynard Smith and Reva Fisher Smith. Billy became a ward of the State of Texas during the Great Depression and resided at the State Orphanage in Corsicana, Texas where he attended school and also met his lifelong best friend and loving wife, Glenda M. Pruett. Billy and Glenda were married on January 19, 1945 in Dallas, TX.
Upon graduation, Billy enlisted in the United States Army. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. After his discharge Billy spent most of his working life in the transportation industry eventually owning his own business until his retirement. Billy loved his work and the independent lifestyle. More than that he loved the many people he worked with, considering them his extended family.
Billy enjoyed all things mechanical and continued this hobby until his later years. Fishing, sports and activities involving his family, brought him great joy as well. His real passion was his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Our Dad was very private about his works, but they were many. He never met a stranger and was very generous with his time and resources, his personal calling. He loved the Lord and continually prayed that he have a heart for service. He loved his family and raised them in that faith.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-four years; his two sisters; and his four brothers.
He leaves behind two daughters, ----- ----- and her husband, -----, and ----- Smith; one son, ----- Smith; his "adopted" daughter, ----- -----; one granddaughter, ----- ----- and her husband, -----; and one great-grandson, ----- ----- all of Abilene. Billy was a devoted animal lover, particularly his small herd of Labs; Luther, Emmie, KoKo, Pearl, and Luke. His furry extended family; Toots, Pippin, and Sassy were equally at home by his side or in his lap.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Joseph Crumbliss and his wonderful staff for the excellent care over the years. The family would also like to thank all the staff and volunteers of Hospice of the Big Country for your love and support and the wonderful "Heavenly" environment you created for Billy and his family. We are blessed!
