bullet  General Notes

MARY MAGLONE was born on 29 Jan 1850 in Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, USA.  She was the daughter of James Maglone and his first wife, Mary Henson.  She grew up in Richland County, Illinois, and it was there that she married her first husband, Richard Upperman, on 04 Feb 1867.

Not much is known of Mary's first husband, Richard Upperman.  He was born about 1839 in Richland County, Illinois.  He was a farmer and a Civil War veteran.  Richard had enlisted in the army in 1862 (he was married when he enlisted) and he served in Company G of the Illinois 98th Infantry Regiment.  After 3 years, Richard mustered out of the army.  Two years after that, he married Mary Maglone.  (What became of his first wife is unknown.)

Richard and Mary had several children, although only two daughters survived to adulthood.  James (b. about 1868) and Ada (b. 1870) both died before the 1880 census.

Richard also became ill, and filed an invalid claim on 22 Aug 1874.  Mary filed for a widow's pension on 29 Aug 1878, so Richard died sometime before then.  He was buried in Noble, Richland County, Illinois (and a headstone was provided by the government in 1894 in McMurtry Cemetery).

On 24 Nov 1878, Mary (Maglone) Upperman married James Richenson in Richland County, Illinois.  It was a short-lived marriage, for whatever reason, and less than a year and half later, on 21 April 1880, Mary married again — this time to Allen Williams.  The family appears on the 1880 census in Noble, Richland County, Illinois — Allen Williams, wife Mary, step-daughters Hettie and Sylvia Upperman, and Mary's sister Rachel Maglone.  The family grew as Mary and Allen had children of their own — twins Nora and Noah, and daughter Nellie.

The family remained in Noble, Illinois for a number of years.  Eldest daughter Hettie got married in 1890 to William Henry Patterson.  Then Sylvia got married in 1892.  At some point, however, Mary and her husband Allen Williams moved from Noble, Illinois to Randles, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  It was probably about 1897 or so that they moved (since Mary's daughter Hettie and her family also moved to the same area). They appeared on the 1900 census in Welch Township, Cape Girardeau, Missouri with their younger children.  In 1902, Nora married John Jacob Shuls, and then in 1904, Nellie married Ebenezer Wilson Gammill.  Nora died young (before the 1910 census), possibly in childbirth — although she did have one son, Virgil Noah Shuls, that survived her.  Nora's twin Noah Tobe Williams also died young, in 1917.

On 06 Feb 1918, Mary's husband Allen Williams died of lobar pneumonia in Randles, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  He was buried the next day in Perkins Cemetery in Randles.  Sometime within the next two years, Mary married her final husband, another Civil War veteran, Levi C. Bryant.  They lived in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, and it was there that "Lee" died on 12 April 1923.  As a veteran, he was buried in the National Cemetery in Springfield on 14 April 1923.

In the 1930 census, Mary is living with her daughter Nellie and her family in Springfield.  But only two years later Mary died of pneumonia on 03 Oct 1932 in Thomas Township, Ripley County, Missouri, USA.  She was buried in the Cyclone Cemetery there on 04 Oct 1932.
