bullet  General Notes

HETTIE ELLEN UPPERMAN was the daughter of Civil War soldier Richard Upperman and his wife, Mary Maglone.  She was born on 22 June 1873 in Noble, Richland County, Illinois, USA. (1874 is the year on her death certificate, but 1873 is more accurate according to the 1880 census and a few other records.)

Not much is known of Hettie's father Richard Upperman.  He was born about 1839 in Richland County, Illinois, and was married before he enlisted in the army in 1862.  He served in Company G of the Illinois 98th Infantry Regiment.  Richard mustered out after 3 years, and then on 04 Feb 1867 he married Mary Maglone in Richland County, Illinois.  (What became of his first family is unknown.)  They had several children, although only two survived to adulthood.  James (b. about 1868) and Ada (b. 1870) both died before the 1880 census.

Richard also became ill, and filed an invalid claim on 22 Aug 1874.  Mary filed for a widow's pension on 29 Aug 1878, so Richard died sometime before then.  He was buried in Noble, Richland County, Illinois (and a headstone was provided by the government in 1894 in McMurtry Cemetery).

On 24 Nov 1878, Mary (Maglone) Upperman married James Richenson in Richland County, Illinois.  It was a short-lived marriage, for whatever reason, and less than a year and half later, on 21 April 1880, Mary married again — this time to Allen Williams.  The family appears on the 1880 census in Noble, Richland County, Illinois — Allen Williams, wife Mary, step-daughters Hettie and Sylvia, and Mary's sister Rachel.    The family grew as Mary and Allen had children of their own — twins Nora and Noah, and daughter Nellie.

Hettie grew up in the town she was born in — Noble, Richland County, Illinois — and it was there that she married her first husband, William Henry Patterson, on 13 Feb 1890. "Henry" (as he was listed on the 1910 census) was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Henry and Hettie continued to live in Noble, Illinois for a number of years and 4 children were born to them there:  Mary, Lula, Allen, and Cassie, but then the family moved to Randles, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

In the 1900 census in Hubble Township, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Hettie appears with her husband and the 4 children born in Illinois.  In 1910 they show up in nearby Oran, Scott County, Missouri, and they now have 3 more children:  Clarence, Bessie, and Ettie.  Born last is daughter Vernie, who shows up on the 1920 census.

Henry became ill and died on 06 June 1912 in Randles, Missouri.  Nearly a year later, on 05 April 1913,  Hettie re-married a local man, James E. Miller.  What happened to James is unknown.  By 1917, Allen was claiming his mother as a dependent, and in 1920, Hettie appears as the head of the household in Welch Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  Besides the younger unmarried children in the household, Hettie also has a boarder — Franklin W. Gordy, a 50-year-old divorcée from Maryland.  Days after the census is enumerated, on 17 Jan 1920, Hettie married Franklin Gordy in Jackson, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri in a court ceremony.

On 07 Nov 1921, in Hubble Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, Hettie died.  She was buried the next day in "Perkins Cemetery" near Randles, otherwise known as Williams Cemetery in Perkins, Scott County, Missouri, USA.
