Other names for Agnes were Agnes BALMER,4 Agnes N. S. BALMER 1 and Agnes Smith Neil BALMER. General Notes Agnes Neill SMITH (also known as Agnes BALMER) was illegitimate. She was raised by her great-aunt, Elizabeth Allan and her great-aunt's husband, George Balmer. It is unknown why they raised her — perhaps to remove shame from her mother, or perhaps her mother died quite young. In the 1881 census she is listed in their household with her proper relationship ("Grand niece"), but by the 1891 census she has taken on the surname "Balmer" and is simply listed as a daughter. On her marriage certificate to Duncan McNab, it lists George Balmer and Elizabeth Allan as her parents. She is certainly their adopted daughter, but biologically she was Elizabeth Allan's great-niece — the child of Margaret Smith, daughter of Elizabeth's sister Agnes Allan (who married Peter Smith).
