Mr. Powell was born March 20, 1921, in Lyle, Wash., to James Walter and Helen Rosa Powell, the youngest of four children. He spent his childhood on his family's 2,400-acre farm at High Prairie, Wash., where he worked hard and enjoyed family life. He cross-country skied to school in the winter and rode horseback in the summer. He graduated from Hartland High School in Lyle Wash., in 1938.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army Oct. 7, 1942, and served until May 9, 1946. He served as an expert infantryman, rifleman, and a messenger. He was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart. He also earned two Bronze Campaign Stars, Victory Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Star, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
While serving in the Army, Mr. Powell met his best friend, Ira Packard, who introduced him to the love of his life, Irlene Packard. They were married Oct. 2, 1947. They had four daughters bless their union.
The Powells were married 38 years and then divorced, although they remained close friends until her death Dec. 19, 2002.
Mr. Powell worked as an ammunitions inspector and supervisor at Umatilla Chemical Depot for 40 years. However, he continued to love farming and owned a 300-acre farm in High Prairie, Wash., which he leased out until 1958. He also spent a couple of summers working at Hermiston Agricultural Research and Experiment Center.
Mr. Powell had many interests. He was an avid bowler and participated in many leagues with his friends and daughters. He was a wonderful father and spent countless hours playing tennis, riding bikes and horses as well as playing games with his daughters and grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Stanfield Moose Lodge and also belonged to a billiards league. In his earlier years he loved camping and hunting as well as flying small airplanes.
Survivors include his four daughters, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and two brothers.
