Grandmother Helen Davenport Powell's family history
Grandmother's mother, Sophronia Abbie Dunton, born in Maine in 1844. Sophronia's mother died and Soprhonia lived in Boston as a child with an aunt whose last name was Tarbox. Sophronia married a sea captain whose last name was Bailey. She had two children from this marriage. Edith who died as a child and Millie who grew up and married Tom King. Sophronia's husband died of yellow fever and Sophronia came to Oregon on the first railroad to be with her father, Landon Dunten, who had a homestead in Eastern Oregon on Wild Horse Creek near Pendleton in Umatilla County.
Sophronia met and married, Dennis Daniel Davenport. Dennis Davenport was born in New York, New York, but came to Eastern Oregon from Ohio. There were three other Davenport brothers. Frank and Loren who lived in Massachusetts. They were fisherman. Frank was married and had children and died in a dynamite explosion. Charles Davenport came west to Oregon. The last Grandma saw of her Uncle Charles was in 1920 when he had visited her and Grandpa, James Powell.
Sophronia and Dennis Davenport had three children all born in Umatilla County, Oregon. Edward Dunton, born April 29, 1880 on Wildhorse Creek; Anna Clarissa, born April 3, 1882; and our grandmother, Helen Rosa Davenport Lowe born May 11, 1886 on Rhea (pronounced Ray) Creek. Grandma stated that she was born in Umatilla County. According to the Handybook for Genealogists Rhea Creek was originally in Umatilla County. However, in 1885 Morrow County was formed from Umatilla County and Rhea Creek became a part of Morrow County.*
Grandma's father was a soldier during the Indian uprisings (years unknown). He went to the gold rush in California (about 1894) and died which left our great grandmother, Sophronia to support and raise three children. Our great grandmother took in washing but couldn't make enough money to feed her children so two of the children went to live with other families. The Robert Lowes took in our grandmother when she was about 9 years old. They fed and clothed her and sent her to school but she had to work very hard for her board and room. She milked cows, did housework, etc. She lived with the Lowe's until she was 19 years old when she married our grandfather, James Powell. Grandpa was raised in Wasco County, Oregon and Grandma was raised on High Prairie, Washington. I don't know how they met.
Grandma's brother, Edward, was raised by a banker and became a very successful banker himself. He married Jane Norman of Kansas City on November 3, 1908. They had no children. On March 23, 1937 Edward and his Chauffeur were killed at a railroad crossing. Jane died in 1972.
Grandmother's sister, Anna married Ben Ehere. They had five children: Arthur, Charlotte, Lincoln, George and Catherine. Anna died in Mildred Ann, London on August 28, 1950. Her son Arthur had two children Maxine and Arlene. Charlotte married someone by the name of King. Lincoln died. George married Dorothy and had no children. Catherine was still living at least a year ago. She was apparently married about four times and her current husband is Dick Murphy. They are in their 80s and live in Fresno, CA. Their daughter, Barbara lives in Fresno and their daughter, Carol Ann, lives in San Rafael.
Grandmother, Helen Powell, died in April of 1975 in Battleground, WA.
