Monumental Inscription: Captain John Paterson E.I.C.S., last survivor of the family of John Paterson of Carron, and his brothers and sisters, erected 1827
He died in Falmouth, Cornwall, England, but there was a monument that was erected in his name in the Larbert Old Parish Churchyard (Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland). This monument was briefly described in the book "Stirlingshire: an inventory of the ancient monuments, Volume 1" by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments and Constructions of Scotland, but when the churchyard was surveyed in 1969 the monument was not seen.
This is a snippet view of what the book said about the monument:
...height of the monument is about 25 ft., and it has been
painted. An inscription on the S. face commemorates
Captain John Paterson, of the East India Company's service,
the last survivor of the family of John Paterson
of Carron, and his brothers and sisters. In the frieze
above the inscription are the words ERECTED /
MDCCCXXVII, and above the cornice the words
[all caps in Greek letters, 3 words] ("He slept the brazen
sleep", i.e. the sleep of death). This quotation,(1) though
it relates to the death of a hero in hand-to-hand com-
