  • He worked as a potato merchant and coal agent. 14 Alexander Greig's niece, Jeanie (Montgomery) Lind, always spoke fondly of her Uncle Sandy and his children. When she discussed his work, Jeanie reported that Uncle Sandy went bankrupt twice: once in coal and once in potatoes.* He was most successful as a potato merchant. In fact, Alexander hired his brother-in-law James Montgomery, and his nephew, Tom, to work in his business. (Tom ended up making potatoes his career, opening Thomas Montgomery and Sons, Potato Merchants in Kilmarnock. The business ultimately closed about 1980 when it could no longer compete with the mass marketing techniques of contemporary produce sales.)
*Documents support a bankruptcy filed in Kilwinning in 1896. According to these documents, Alexander Greig did not cause the bankruptcy by mismanagement or illegal use of business funds.
