Excerpts from the Agnes McFarlane McKenzie obituary
Mrs. Daniel (Agnes) passed away at the Kittson War Veterans' Memorial Hospital on Setember 27, 1961. She was 87 years and 7 months of age. Born in Morristown, Ontario, Canada on February 22, 1874 and settled at Northcote, MN about the year 1892. She taught school at Bronson school, which in the early years stood where the present town of Lake Broson is located. She also taught at the William Moore schoolhouse a short distance north of Hallock.
She married the late Daniel McKenzie on December 18, 1895 at Northcote and they had three children: Marguerite (Mrs. B.B. Kunkle), deceased, and Carol, with whom her mother lived in Hallock, and Lloyd of St. Paul. All surviving are four grandchildren, Donald of North St. Paul; Mrs. Helen Zuncher, St. Paul; Mrs. Margaret Wrenn, Columbus, OH; Mrs. Jean ___ and great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers & sisters: John D. MacFarlane, Binscarth, Manitoba; Mr. Be.F. Wooley, St. Paul, Dan MacFarlane, Missoula, Montana; Ernest MacFarlane, Northcote; Mrs. Geraldine MacFarlane, St. Paul; Mrs. Angus Murray, Northcoate and Mr. Russell MacFarlane, Newport, Michigan. Preceeding her in death were her husband, brothers and sisters: Mrs. John Murray, James MacFarlane, Mrs. T.D. Winter, Rev. Peter MacFarlane.
Mrs. McKenzie came from one of the county's most prominent families. She was a woman who was exceptionally well thought of by all who knew here. She had strong religious inclinations and was a very devoted member of her church. In late years her health likely prevented her from taking any active part in church work, but had she been able to to do so, there likely would be no diversion that would mean more to her than to spend her leisure time advancing the faith of her church. She raised a fine family, all of who have proven to be a credit to her and the communities in which they live. Her popularity was beautifully attested to by the floral tributes and memorial gifts given in connection with the last and office for the dead. To those who mourn the death of this woman there is consolation in the fact that her life was spent in the faith of her fathers and in loving tribute and faithful devotion to Christ and in all other ways in an atmosphere of devotion to all who knew her. The funeral was held at the Hallock Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member on Friday, September 29, 1961 at 2:00pm, the Rev. William Steele officiating.
