bullet  General Notes

ANNA C. SCOTT was born 09 January 1820 in New York, USA.  In 1837, probably in New Orleans, Louisiana, Anna became the second wife of William Long, son of Thomas Long and Mary Stout of Oldham County, Kentucky, USA.  William had been born about 1803 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA.  He had previously been married to Eliza Murphy, but she died in 1835 (probably in New Orleans).  William and Eliza had no children, but William and his second wife Anna C. Scott had four children — Mary Arabella, Isadora, Anne Eliza, and William Brightford Long.

William Long was in business in New Orleans with a partner, Bernard Maglone of Pennsylvania — "Long & Maglone; copper, tin & sheet iron workers."  However on 23 September 1847, after 10 years of marriage, William died in New Orleans, leaving Anna a widow with four young children.  He was buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery #1.

Nearly a year later, on 14 September 1848, Anna married William's former partner, Bernard Maglone.  Bernard was born about 1815 in Pennsylvania, the son of James Maglone of County Monaghan, Ireland and Mary Landers of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, USA.  Bernard's parents and most of his siblings settled in Noble, Richland County, Illinois, so he was without other family in the New Orleans area (although it is possible the John Maglone in Louisiana from this time period was Bernard's brother).

Bernard and Anna had three more children together, but two of them died quite young and only one survived to adulthood.  Bernard was born first, in 1850, but he died in July 1853 when he was only three years old.  Mary Clarinda was next, born in November 1851, but she also died before the 1860 census.  Last came Clay Bernard Maglone, born on 13 May 1854 in New Orleans, nearly a year after his elder brother's death.  Clay lived to marry and have children, so there are still Maglone descendants of Anna Scott living in Louisiana today (just as there are descendants of William Long).

Unfortunately, Bernard Maglone also died fairly young, after less than seven years of marriage.  Tinsmithing must have been a dangerous business!  He died in New Orleans on 09 July 1855.  Five years later, on the 1860 census, Anna appears in New Orleans with her two eldest daughters and their husbands, one grandchild, and her youngest, Clay Bernard Maglone.  By 1870, the families have relocated to East Feliciana Parish and they settle there.

Anna did not remarry after Bernard's death.  She remained a widow for another 32 years before she died herself on 20 February 1888.  Anna was buried in Old Jackson Cemetery near the graves of some of her grandchildren.  In later years, Anna's daughter Mary Arabella and her husband Augustus Livingston East were also buried there.

  • She has conflicting birth information of Abt 1822 and Indiana, USA.
  • She resided at Faubourg St. Mary in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA before 23 September 1847. Faubourg is an ancient French term approximating "suburb." The term was also used in the early expansion of New Orleans beyond the original city plan, when French was still a common language in the colonial city, even though in terms of characteristics, real faubourgs never existed in the city. Faubourg Tremé and Faubourg Marigny, two of the oldest neighborhoods outside of the French Quarter, are persistent examples. Another early example was Faubourg St. Mary, a commercial district, which developed into the modern Central Business District.
