Vernon Center — Mary Ellen Zabele, age 86, of Peterboro Road passed away Friday, June 3, 2016 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
She was born on April 9, 1930 in Vernon, New York, a daughter of the late Harry B. and Zoa (Thurston) Hogan, and was a graduate of Vernon High School.
Mary Ellen married George "Pete" Zabele on May 8, 1954 in Sherrill, New York. The couple celebrated over 56 years of marriage together until Mr. Zabele's death on Aug. 15, 2010.
Mary Ellen was a member of Gethsemane Episcopal Church of Sherrill and was active with the DAR.
She was a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who dearly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an enthusiastic reader, and was particularly fond of puzzles. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and loved discussing sports, especially with New York fans. She loved her flowers and her garden, and in the years since her husband's passing took great pride in the appearance of her home. And she especially loved her dog Gizmo, who has been her constant companion for the last four years.
Surviving is one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. ----- (-----) Zabele of North Reading, Mass.; two daughters and two sons-in-law, ----- (-----) ----- of Vernon, and ----- (-----) ----- of Chicopee, Mass.; five grandchildren, ----- -----, ----- (-----) -----, and Dr. ----- Zabele, ----- Zabele and ----- (-----) -----; five great-grandchildren; one sister, ----- ----- of Vernon Center; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon. Mrs. Zabele's funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Gethsemane Church in Sherrill, with Rev. Beverly Messenger-Harris officiating.
