VERNON CENTER — George E. "Pete" Zabele, age 78, of Peterboro Road passed away early Sunday morning Aug. 15, 2010 in the Martin Luther Home of Clinton with his loving family at his bedside.
George was born on Nov. 2, 1931 in Oneida, N.Y. a son of the late George G. and Florence (Rutan) Zabele and was a graduate of Sherrill High School.
On May 8, 1954 George and Mary Ellen Hogan were united in marriage in Sherrill, New York and have shared a loving union of over 56 years together.
Prior to his retirement in 2003 George was a self employed construction operator and an insurance agent for both North Country and Broome County.
His memberships included, the Gethsemane Episcopal Church of Sherrill, the Sconondoa Masonic Lodge #814 of Vernon and the Ziyara Shrine of Utica. He was a former Town of Vernon councilman and Republican Committee chairman. He was a wood craftsman and enjoyed making dulcimers with his brother Ted.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen Zabele of Vernon Center, one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. ----- (-----) Zabele of North Reading, Mass.; two daughters and two sons-in-law, ----- (-----) ----- of Vernon and ----- (-----) ----- of Chicopee, Mass.; five grandchildren, ----- (-----) -----, ----- ----- (fiancée -----) and Dr. -----, ----- and ----- Zabele; four great-grandchildren; one sister Crystal Moshier of Sherrill; two brothers ----- Zabele of Verona and ----- Zabele of Vernon Center; as well as several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brother Roy.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc. 23 Front St., Vernon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, Vernon with Rev. Beverly Messinger-Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, N.Y. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Valley Crest unit for their kind and compassionate care given to "Pete" during his stay at the Martin Luther nursing facility.
