Enid Ruth Collver Staines
A celebration of the life of Enid Ruth Collver Staines, 100, of Coos Bay, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, at the First United Methodist Church of Coos Bay, 123 Ocean Blvd., with the Rev. David King officiating. Private inurnment will be at the South Coos River Pioneer Cemetery.
Enid was born Sept. 10, 1907, on Stock Slough in Marshfield, the fifth child and second daughter of Tillo Monroe and Carrie Evelyn (Moore) Collver. She died May 31, 2008, in Coos Bay.
She was raised on Stock Slough and attended Catching Inlet Elementary School and Marshfield High School, graduating in 1926. She married Terence Henkle Staines in her parent's home on Dec. 28, 1930, and they were married for more than 65 years, until Terence's death on May 7, 1996. They were parents of three daughters.
During the first seven years of their marriage, they lived in Parkdale, Bickleton, Wash., and Walla Walla, Wash. They moved to Marshfield in 1937 and maintained their primary residence on Stock Slough for the rest of their lives.
During World War II she worked at Bay View Dairy, owned by William and Georgia Gunnell. After her daughters were married, she worked in retail sales at J.C. Penney and The Hub, until her retirement. She was a member of the Catching Inlet Home Extension Club (now FCE) since 1939, a member of The Rivemen's Association and the Coos County Historical Society. Her local church affiliations were with the First Presbyterian and First United Methodist churches of Coos Bay.
She had the unique quality of instilling the belief in each of her descendants that she or he was her very favorite. In return, each of them adored her and being with her in her home was their fondest desire.
She is survived by her three daughters, a son-in-law; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all of her siblings, grandson, James Philip Martin; and great-grandson, Jeramy Thomas Sytsma.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay, OR 97420; or South Coast Gospel Mission, 1999 N. 7th St., Coos Bay, OR 97420.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
