General Notes
WILLIAM HAINING was born 30 January 1830 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of David Haining and Margaret Currie. He was baptized in the Ochiltree Parish Church on 06 February 1830. By the 1841 census, however, the David Haining family had settled in Tarbolton and so William grew up there. William learned his trade from his father. He worked as a shoemaker.
On 08 July 1853 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland, William married Annie Stobo, daughter of Thomas Stobo and Elizabeth Mitchell. She was just a few years older than him, born about 1824 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Together they raised seven children: daughters Elizabeth, Margaret, and Janet Stobo, twins Anne and David, youngest daughter Mary, and youngest son Thomas Stobo Haining.
William's older brother David also learned the trade of shoemaker, but David and his family moved to Symington, whereas William and his family stayed in the village of Tarbolton. William worked alongside his father until his father David's death in 1868, and then William managed the boot shop on his own.
On 04 June 1886, at the age of 62 years old, William's wife Annie Stobo died in Tarbolton and was buried in the parish churchyard. William also died at the age of 62, of influenza, in the Ayr District Asylum in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was buried next to his wife in Tarbolton Churchyard.
